Giant new BMW X7 luxury SUV due in 2018
New BMW X7 SUV is "well through development phases", with even more luxurious model planned later in its life
The new BMW X7 luxury SUV is due to arrive in 2018, after the flagship 4x4 was teased earlier this month in a strategic statement from the brand.
Speaking at the New York Motor Show, BMW AG sales and marketing director Ian Robertson said that the X7 "won't arrive this year or next, but it's well through the development phases."
He added: "There’s very little resemblance to the X5, so it’s not an extended wheelbase X5. It’s very different – we wanted it to have its own identity."
Robertson also commented on the new SUV's luxury appeal: "We will make a higher luxury version of it as well. So in the same way as you take a 7 Series and you bring in the Individual bespoke service as with Rolls Royce.
In its new strateigic statement released in mid-March, BMW says "After leading the premium segment for more than ten consecutive years, the BMW brand is now poised to strengthen its position on a sustainable basis at the top end of its product portfolio, where rates of return are at their highest".
“We will be broadening our model range with the BMW X7,” Krüger said. “We are also taking an in-depth look at the additional potential of this highly attractive segment.”
Details of what we can expect from the X7 remain thin on the ground, but the teaser image - a screengrab from the presentation - shows the model under a dust sheet, probably in concept form.
We expect a design concept to debut at a motor show sometime in the next year, but a production car won't be arriving for another two years, and we're not even sure if it will come to the UK yet. These spyshots in 2014 were reported to be of a test mule simulating the weight ot the X7.
Although there aren't many larger SUVs than BMW's current X5 in the UK and Europe, in America truly huge 7-seat SUVs are very popular, with models such as the Cadillac Escalade commanding impressive sales figures. The new X7 is predicted to be built in the US and we expect China and the Middle-East to be BMW's priority markets.
The X7's engines will also buck the European trend for downsizing, with a range of six-cylinder, V8 and V12 engines confirmed. But there is expected to be a development of the eDrive plug-in hybrid system which will appear in the X5.
When it arrives in 2018, the X7 will most likely share some parts with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV, which was confirmed as being worked on earlier this month.
Do you think an even bigger and pricier model sitting above the BMW X5 is necessary in the UK? Let us know in the comments below...

New Audi R8 Spyder blows its top at New York show
Audi reveals the convertible version of its R8 V10 supercar at New York 2016 show, with 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds
We've seen spy images and teasers, but now Audi's new R8 Spyder is out in the open. The V10-powered droptop makes its world debut at the 2016 New York Motor Show and will go on sale later this year.
As you’d expect the R8 Spyder shares much of its exterior design with the fixed-roof Coupe, save for a few big tweaks. That means it gets the same gaping grille and sharp headlights, as well as identical gills in the bumper and bodywork.
Down the side you’ll notice the same subtle V10 badges, as well as the recognisable carbon air scoop. The rear haunches are notably different, though, with a long, wide deck housing the folding fabric roof.
Like the outgoing R8 Spyder, the drop-top gets rid of the glass panel above the engine from the Coupe and adds extra cooling vents to the extended rear panel. The fabric roof itself is very similar in design to the old car, with two buttresses on either side extending back onto the engine bay and a vertical rear window that retracts when the roof is lowered.
That cloth roof weighs just 44kg, and can open and close at up to 31mph in 20 seconds. Audi is claiming air turbulence has been reduced, with road and wind noise "much lower" than the old R8 Spyder. A synthetic textile wind deflector helps to reduce airflow around the head by around 90 per cent.
The whole car weighs 1,612kg dry, which is claimed to be 113kg lighter than the previous R8 Spyder thanks to the carbon-fibre reinforced spaceframe and additional stiffening to the A-pillar and sills. The kerbweight is estimated to be around 1,720kg, about 125kg more than the coupe. Torsional rigidity has improved by 50 per cent over the previous model.
With the same 5.2-litre V10 as the hard-top pumping out 532bhp and 540Nm of torque, mated to the S-Tronic dual clutch autobox, this means the R8 Spyder can shoot from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. That's one-tenth down on the standard R8, with a top speed of 198mph just 1mph less than the coupe.
Claimed fuel economy is 10 per cent better than the previous Spyder, at 24.1mpg. CO2 emissions stand at 277g/km. We expect a more powerful 'plus' version of the R8 Spyder to debut towards the end of this year with 601bhp.
Like the Coupe, it features the TT’s Virtual Cockpit display inside, with no central screen. The same big red starter button sits on the flat-bottomed steering wheel, while the heater controls are placed below the dash-mounted air vents.
No UK pricing has been released for the R8 Spyder as yet, but like the old model we can expect around a £10,000 premium over the hardtop, which is priced at £119,500 and £137,500 for the plus.
New Mercedes-AMG E 63 range spied out in the wild
Hot new Mercedes-AMG E 63 saloon and estate could have up to 600bhp to compete with BMW M5
Mercedes-AMG is adding the finishing touches to the new range-topping E63. Recent spy shots show both saloon and estate prototypes undergoing final testing ahead of an arrival towards the end of the year.
If you’re thinking Mercedes-AMG has already had its hands on the E-Class you’d be correct, but the 394bhp E43 was introduced to bridge the gap between the standard saloon and this full-blooded BMW M5 rival.
Whereas the E43 is powered by a 394bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, the E63 is likely to switch to the larger and more powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the AMG GT supercar. That engine currently produces 503bhp, but engineers are expected to crank that up to around 550bhp in order to keep pace with the 552bhp M5. However, Mercedes-AMG could also introduce an even faster S version boasting around 600bhp.
To help contain the power, expect the E63 to switch to a rear-biased four-wheel drive system – like that found on the E43 – which will be driven through a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
There will be changes to the suspension which will be lowered and stiffened to boost agility, while beefier brakes will also be housed under larger alloy wheels.
Take a closer look at the spy shots and you can pick out some further visual tweaks, too. The vents on the front bumper are wider and deeper allowing the engine to breath more feely, while at the rear four-tailpipes hint at the performance on offer.
The E63 will also be unique in the respect that it will be offered in both saloon and estate bodystyles – the Audi RS6 is estate only, while the BMW M5 is strictly a saloon. Prices should start from around £85,000.
